Detoxification is an ongoing bodily process which focuses on the neutralization and elimination of toxic substances in your body. These toxic substances are potentially harmful to the body tissues. They include waste products from the normal activities of the cells of the body such as lactic acid, homocysteine, and ammonia. They also include man-made toxins that you are exposed to in your food, water, and environment. The lymphatic systems, lungs, skin, liver, intestines, blood, and kidneys work altogether in order to ensure the chemical transformation to less harmful substances and excretion from the body of these toxic substances. In order to help the body to get rid of these toxins, it is important to have a detoxification diet.
Detoxification diet is a short-term diet programme which removes both dietary and environmental toxins out of the body. It includes reduction on the amount of harmful chemicals ingested and eating nutritious foods. These foods should contain vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidants that you need to detoxify your body. They should also contain fiber and water in order to draw out and remove the toxins by enhancing the frequency of urination and bowel movement. Without these nutritious contents, your body can lose its detoxification ability which may later lead to chemical build-up in the body. This build up can lead to diseases and other conditions such as hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiencies, inefficient metabolism, and weak immune function. The signs and symptoms noted in these conditions are sluggishness, bad breath, indigestion, headaches, poor concentration and fatigue.
Since the number of harmful chemicals that you ingest everyday through water, air, and food can be deposited in your fat cells, it is important for you to follow a detoxification diet. This diet results to an improved energy, a younger and clearer skin, regular elimination, enhanced digestion, and boosted clarity and concentration.
If you are considering a detoxification diet, you should consult your health care provider or doctor first. Pregnant women as well as those who are nursing should not follow this type of diet. Children and people with existing conditions such as eating disorders, kidney problems, diabetes, anemia, cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases, and terminal illness should not try this diet as well. Bear in mind that assessment and advice from your health care provider should be sought before following this type of diet. In addtion, this is not intended for drug or alcohol detoxification.
